With Carta’s extensive data on startup cap tables (and more), their new Equity Report provides a novel view of the compensation and equity in startups. The splits by gender and race are revealing:
- Black and Latino employees receive less equity compensation than their peers: they are 12% of the population, 7% of employees with some equity, and 3% of the equity value.
- While women represent 36% of the employees with equity, they receive 28% of the value.
- Differences in rank can only partially explain these differences
- If there is a parenthood penalty, it appears to hold more for men than women
